How to Unzip Files?

For Windows Users: there are many free utilities available for windows users to unzip the files. Some of the popular utilities are:

7 Zip – It is completely free. ( Download from here – http://www.7-zip.org/download.html – Depending on whether your windows is 32 bit or 64 bit ) Tip – If you are not sure about the 32 bit or 64 bit windows – Just download the 32 bit option. It works on all. You need to choose the one ending in either .exe or .msi. Just follow the instructions and keep clicking yes.

There are other unzipping utilties available but most of them are either shareware or one needs to pay to use them. Additional free zip tools are listed in the resources below.

Once you have installed the 7zip utility, navigate to the folder where you had downloaded/saved the zip files. You can extract the file therein in two ways. First is to double-click on the file. A new window will open showing you the files in the zipped file. You can then select the files with your mouse, you want to extract and press the extract button on the top bar. It will ask you to choose a place to save the extracted file. Save them in the same folder if you want. Another way to extract files is to right click on the zipped file and selecting the 7-Zip option. Select extract files and tell it to save the files at the place you want.

Once you have extracted the files, it is a good idea to delete the zipped files as these will take unnecessary space on your computer.

For Mac Users: Most of the Macs come with inbuilt decompression software. So you may not need to actually download a separate program for unzipping. To check, just double click on the zipped file and if it opens – it means you do not anything additional.

However, if your Mac does not have this, you can download free unzip programs from internet. One of the popular programs for Mac users is StuffIt Expander ( Download here: http://download.cnet.com/StuffIt-Expander/3000-2250_4-10653042.html ) and another popular utility is IZip ( Download Here: http://www.izip.com/ )
